Mwanza, – The President of the United Republic of Tanzania, Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan, officially inaugurated the JP Magufuli Bridge today, June 19, 2025. The bridge spans 3.0 kilometers and is accompanied by connecting roads measuring 1.66 kilometers in the Kigongo–Busisi area, Mwanza region.
This significant infrastructure project is considered as historic for boosting the economy of the Lake Zone and enhancing transportation between the regions of Geita, Mwanza, Simiyu, and neighboring areas.
The bridge ranks among the longest in East Africa and is expected to completely transform the road transport system while reducing reliance on ferries in the region.
Addressing the hundreds of citizens who gathered to witness the launch, President Samia stated:
"This bridge not only connects the people of Kigongo and Busisi, but it also links economic, social, and developmental opportunities for the people of the Lake Zone. It symbolizes the government's commitment to continue building an industrialized and inclusive economy in Tanzania."
The JP Magufuli Bridge is named in honor of the late fifth President, Dr. John Pombe Magufuli, who initiated its construction as part of a national infrastructure enhancement agenda.
Residents of the area have expressed their joy at this development, stating that their journeys will now be faster, safer, and more affordable.
