The Tanzania Ports Authority (TPA) has announced that the government's decision to invest significantly in infrastructure and the procurement of modern equipment, along with engaging the private sector in the operation of ports across the country, has proven beneficial.
This initiative has enhanced the efficiency and capacity of the Port of Dar es Salaam, enabling it to handle 27.7 million tons in the fiscal year 2024/2025, a substantial increase from its previous capacity of 18 million tons in 2021/2022.
Speaking in Dar es Salaam on August 22, 2025, on behalf of the TPA Director General, Mr. Plasduce Mkeli Mbossa, the Acting Director of the Port of Dar es Salaam, Mr. Abed Gallus Abed, stated that this level of cargo handling represents a 15% annual growth, a milestone that has not been achieved since the port's inception.
Mr. Gallus emphasized that since the entry of port operators DP WORLD and Tanzania East Africa Gateway Terminal Limited (TEAGTL) a year ago, the port's capacity to handle cargo has increased by 4 million tons, rising from 23.69 million tons in 2023/2024 to 27.7 million tons in 2024/2025.
He also urged customers and stakeholders of TPA through the Port of Dar es Salaam to continue utilizing this port, as it provides high-efficiency services at a large scale, enabling them to collectively achieve their goals and contribute to the nation as a whole.
The enhancement of infrastructure has facilitated benefits and efficiency within the country, marking a crucial step in stimulating national development.
Investment in ports has led to an increase in the National Income and has created job opportunities for citizens, particularly the youth.
