The District Commissioner of Nyamagana, Honorable Amina Makilagi, has urged employers and employees across the country to fully implement the Occupational Safety and Health Act No. 5 of 2003 to reduce or completely eliminate accidents and illnesses caused by poor working conditions.

‎Honorable Makilagi made this call yesterday during the OSHA Community Service Bonanza (OSHA CSR Bonanza 2025) held at the grounds of Nyakabungo Primary School in Nyamagana District, Mwanza City. The event included various social and sports activities aimed at strengthening the bond between OSHA and the community it serves, as well as providing support to students of Mirongo Technical College, including those with disabilities.

‎During the event, OSHA donated various equipment to Mirongo Technical College, including computers, workplace safety gear, and sports equipment such as balls and sports jerseys.

‎Speaking as the Guest of Honor, Honorable Makilagi praised OSHA for its efforts to ensure safe and healthy working environments and for showing compassion towards special groups in the community.

‎"I urge employers and employees in the country to read and implement the Occupational Safety and Health Act No. 5 of 2003. If this law is properly enforced, workplaces will be safe, free from accidents and diseases, thus increasing productivity at work," said District Commissioner Makilagi.

‎Additionally, she assured OSHA of the Council's and her Office's cooperation in overseeing the registration and inspection of workplaces, as well as providing professional advice on improving working conditions.

‎On her part, OSHA's Chief Executive Officer, Ms. Khadija Mwenda, stated that the Bonanza is part of the agency's corporate social responsibility program and that the support given to Mirongo College was based on an assessment conducted by OSHA experts after visiting the college.

‎"We believe that by supporting technical colleges like Mirongo, we are significantly contributing to the preparation of future professionals in essential technical and vocational fields," stated Ms. Mwenda.

‎Acting Principal of Mirongo College, Ms. Herieth Richard, together with a tailoring student, Ms. Aneth Augustino, expressed their gratitude to OSHA for the assistance, which they said has boosted their enthusiasm for learning and participating in community activities.

‎The event featured various sports including football, netball, athletics, and traditional games such as sack races, lemon-and-spoon races, tug-of-war, and chicken catching. Participants came from OSHA and the technical colleges of Mirongo, Nyakato, and Kisesa.

‎Mirongo Technical College is government-owned under the Office of the Prime Minister (Labour, Youth, Employment, and Persons with Disabilities) and offers training in electrical work, carpentry, tailoring, and welding for youth, including those with special needs.
