He said that this year's theme, "Our Ocean, Our Responsibility, Our Opportunity," serves as a reminder of the ocean's vital role in providing jobs, boosting the economy, and preserving marine life.

He pointed out that human activities have significantly impacted the ocean's ability to fulfill its functions, citing plastic pollution, oil spills, chemical discharges, overfishing, and the increase of greenhouse gases as major challenges.  "This situation contributes to global warming, rising sea levels, and affects the livelihoods of many communities, especially those on islands."

Salum emphasized that protecting the ocean is a collective responsibility of the government, the private sector, and the public. He mentioned that decisive actions are needed to reduce pollution, promote sustainable transportation, and enhance the blue economy for the benefit of current and future generations.

The ocean is crucial for biological education, species, and innovation, thus preserving it is a vital step in improving friendly environments that often attract research and stimulate scientific innovation.

The 'ocean'  is home to a diverse range of creatures, so safeguarding these beings is a commendable science in maintaining ecology and advancing species within communities and the world at large.

Much research arises from favorable environments, often inspiring education, efforts, studies, and understanding of various living organisms that are essential to the foundation of human life.
