Tanzania has called for strengthened international cooperation to ensure the rapid development of Artificial Intelligence (AI) is guided by inclusive, transparent, and equitable global frameworks.
The nation warned that developing countries must not be left behind as this technology continues to transform economies and societies.
Speaking before more than 190 delegates representing governments, international organizations, the private sector, and the global tech community at the ' Global Dialogue on AI Governance, the Tanzanian Minister of Information, Communication, and Information Technology, Hon. Angellah Kairuki (MP), presented Tanzania's vision for leveraging AI as a catalyst for national development .
" Tanzania is implementing deep policy and regulatory reforms to create a robust environment that fosters innovation while protecting citizens' rights and building public trust." she added.
“Tanzania believes AI as a potential sector for accelerating development in agriculture, health, education, financial services, and public governance sectors,” said Hon. Kairuki. “Therefore, its use must be safe, inclusive, and aimed at ensuring all citizens benefit.”
" Effective AI governance requires sustained international collaboration." she said.
AI governance is set to develop regulatory frameworks, improving data management systems, enhancing privacy , cybersecurity protections, and preparing national guidelines for AI use in strategic sectors like education , health, business and agriculture.
The ongoing investment in digital infrastructure in Tanzania such as the expansion of the National Information and Communication Technology Broadband Backbone (NICTBB) and the development of Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI) has improved the crucial foundations for expanding digital connectivity and enabling more citizens across the country to access AI-powered services.
Meanwhile , The Tanzania's commitment to continue working closely with the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), the African Union (AU), the African Telecommunications Union (ATU), the East African Community (EAC), and the Southern African Development Community (SADC) aims to promote interoperable digital systems that facilitate cross-border innovation, trade, and services while safeguarding national sovereignty and data security.
"For enhanced international cooperation in technology transfer, skills development, research collaboration, innovation, and the investment in digital infrastructure, we need a joint action to ensure the benefits of AI are shared equitably between developed and developing nations."she said.
The Global Dialogue on AI Governance brings together policymakers, government leaders, technology experts, and private sector stakeholders from around the world with the goal of building international AI governance frameworks and discussing how the technology can contribute to inclusive and sustainable development.
