| Tanzania’s Minister of Minerals Anthony Mavunde and China’s Deputy Minister of Natural Resources Dr. Xu Dachun met in Tianjin on 11 September 2026 and agreed to deepen mining cooperation, including geological capacity building, a high-resolution airborne geophysical survey in the central block, and exchange of technology and licensing expertise. |
The Government of the United Republic of Tanzania and the Government of the People’s Republic of China have agreed to strengthen cooperation in the mining sector in order to improve the economies of citizens of both nations.
The statement was made on 11 September 2026 by the Minister of Minerals, Hon. Anthony Mavunde (MP), when he met and held talks with the Deputy Minister of Natural Resources of China, Hon. Dr. Xu Dachun, at the Government conference hall in Tianjin, China.
During the talks, Minister Mavunde noted that the Government of China, through the Geological Survey of China, has agreed to build the capacity of Tanzanian experts in geology and in how to accurately interpret mineral research data.
“The ambition of our President, Hon. Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan, is to see the mining sector grow and increase its contribution to our country’s economy. That is why the President has given the mining sector high priority, especially in geological research, in order to increase mining productivity and benefits for the citizens of our nation and the economy as a whole.”he said.
In addition, Hon. Mavunde explained that China, through grants, is preparing to cooperate with Tanzania in conducting a detailed airborne mineral survey — a high-resolution airborne geophysical survey — in the central block comprising the regions of Dodoma, Tabora, Singida and Shinyanga.
Among other issues, the talks also focused on discussions on how to exchange experience and expertise in the use of technology in the development of mining activities, including strengthening the licensing system.
Meanwhile, Dr. Xu Dachun, Deputy Minister of Natural Resources of China, who is also President of the China Geological Survey (CGS), thanked Tanzania for participating in the China Mining Conference and stressed that he is ready to continue providing cooperation to the Government of Tanzania in exchanging experience that will help develop their mining sectors.
Dr. Dachun also stressed that cooperation between Tanzania and China has great meaning and benefits for both countries, because Tanzania has many investment opportunities while China has technology and capital. Therefore, cooperation between these countries will clearly bring productive benefits to the citizens of both countries.
The cooperation is expected to stimulate economic growth and employment in both countries.
