Why professor Janabi's seven priorities matter

WHO new appointed leader

Prof. Mohammed Janabi presented seven key priorities to the Health Ministers of World Health Organization member states in Africa, seeking their endorsement for his candidacy as the Regional Director of the WHO.

During his presentation on May 18, 2025, he committed to enhancing healthcare services, particularly at the primary level, emphasizing the need for sustainable health access for all.

He highlighted that currently, only 46% of the African population receives quality healthcare, while the global target is 68% by 2030.

Prof. Janabi also pledged to secure financial resources to improve healthcare access and stressed the importance of member states' preparedness for health emergencies and disasters.

He underscored the urgent need to enhance maternal and child health services, noting that Africa accounts for 70% of maternal deaths and 56% of neonatal fatalities worldwide.

Furthermore, he expressed his intention to intensify efforts against infectious diseases, including HIV, tuberculosis, and malaria, which significantly hinder the continent's economic progress.

Lastly, he addressed the critical challenge of antimicrobial resistance, revealing that over 1.2 million deaths occur annually due to this issue, with 40% of African countries lacking effective 'management systems' to combat the crisis.

Professor Janabi appointed as new director of WHO

Tanzania's Presidential Advisor on Health and Medicine, who also serves as the Executive Director of "Muhimbili National"  Hospital, Professor Mohamed Yakub Janabi, has been officially announced as the new Director of the World Health Organization (WHO).

This election fills the vacancy left by the late Dr. Faustine Ndugulile, the previous appointee. Notably, Professor Janabi was the sole candidate from sub-Saharan Africa, competing against four others from West Africa, including Dr. N’da Konan Michel Yao from Ivory Coast, Dr. Dramé Mohammed Lamine from Guinea, Dr. Boureima Hama Sambo from Niger, and Professor Mijiyawa Moustafa from Togo.
