Dodoma's Innovative Approach to Shaping Copper Cleaning Practices

Dodoma establishes an industry for transforming copper mine

The Dodoma region is preparing to make a new mark in the mineral processing sector, following the final stages of construction for the new Shengde Precious Metal Resources Company Ltd factory located in the Nala area, which is expected to officially commence copper cathode production in July 2025.

During a special inspection visit, the Resident Mining Officer for Dodoma, Engineer Menard Msengi, said that the construction of this factory is a significant step towards implementing the directive from the Minister of Minerals, Honorable Anthony Mavunde, to ensure that by July 30, 2025, all copper processing from mining in the country is conducted within Tanzania's borders.

"The arrival of this factory is a crucial catalyst for the development of the Mining Sector in Dodoma and the country as a whole," Engineer Msengi remarked, adding that, "this project will benefit small-scale miners by providing them with a reliable market, increasing the value of minerals, and boosting the income of both the local community and the nation."

This factory is among the projects being monitored through the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), which aims to stimulate the development of the industrial mining sector, including oversight of royalty issues, mine safety, and the sector's contribution to sustainable development.

On his part, the Director of Shengde factory, Abia Mafie, mentioned that the factory has already begun production trials and can produce 20 tons of copper cathode per day.

"We expect the arrival of larger machinery that will increase our capacity to produce up to 1,000 tons per day. This will assist small-scale miners who face challenges in finding markets due to international standards," Mafie explained.

While demonstrating to visitors how production takes place, Mafie emphasized that the factory utilizes every piece of mineral available: "Even the copper dust is used to make bricks – nothing is wasted."

Additionally, the company has announced a plan to establish five more factories in various regions of Tanzania as part of their contribution to the government's efforts to enhance the value of minerals before they are exported.
