Museveni's Return to the Presidential Arena: A Historical Perspective

President of Uganda

The President of Uganda, Yoweri Museveni, is set to run for re-election in the upcoming polls scheduled for early next year, aiming to extend his nearly four-decade rule, as confirmed by a senior official from the ruling party.

While his candidacy was anticipated, this marks the first official confirmation from his party, the National Resistance Movement (NRM).

Uganda will hold its general elections in January, during which voters will also select members of parliament.

At 80 years old, Museveni has been in power since 1986, making him the fourth longest-serving leader in Africa. The ruling party has amended the constitution twice in the past to allow him to prolong his presidency.

In a video released on Monday evening by the UBC broadcasting agency on the social media platform X, Tanga Odoi, the chairman of the ruling party's electoral council, announced that Museveni will submit his nomination papers on June 28 to represent the party in the election.
