Tanzania has been removed from the list of countries with strategic deficiencies in anti-money laundering, counter-terrorism financing, and the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction (Grey List).
This decision was announced by the President of the Financial Action Task Force (FATF), Ms. Elisa de Anda Madrazo, at the conclusion of the FATF Plenary held in Strasbourg, France, from June 10 to 13, 2025.
The United Republic of Tanzania was placed on the list of countries with strategic deficiencies in anti-money laundering, counter-terrorism financing, and the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction (Grey List) in October 2022.
Speaking on behalf of the Government of the United Republic of Tanzania during the FATF meeting, the Tanzanian delegation, led by the Deputy Governor of the Bank of Tanzania, who is also the Chairperson of the National Anti-Money Laundering Experts Committee, Ms. Sauda Msemo, and the Commissioner of the Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU), Mr. Majaba Magana, assured FATF and the international community that Tanzania is genuinely committed to ensuring that its regulatory systems remain robust.
"The government will promote international cooperation and uphold the principles of transparency, accountability, and good governance within the financial system, which will contribute to enhancing the security of the country, the region, and the entire global financial network," said Ms. Msemo.
Commenting on this event while in Dodoma, the Minister of Finance, Hon. Dr. Mwigulu Lameck Nchemba (MP), expressed gratitude to the Subcommittee of the African Group for their cooperation throughout the process, the FATF Secretariat, and the Eastern and Southern Africa Anti-Money Laundering Group (ESAAMLG) for their significant efforts that enabled the country to be removed from the grey list, acknowledging and appreciating the technical and financial support from development partners in these efforts.
"We would like to assure the public and the international community that Honorable Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan, the President of the United Republic of Tanzania, is committed to ensuring that our country remains safe from criminal activities within the financial system," stated Hon. Dr. Nchemba.
He mentioned that the country will maintain the positive outcomes that Tanzania has achieved and continue to collaborate with both domestic and international stakeholders in the fight against money laundering, terrorism financing, and the funding of weapons of mass destruction; to ensure that Tanzania remains a leader in integrity and transparency within financial systems, characterized by sustainable development and prosperity.
Hon. Dr. Nchemba has announced to the international community that Tanzania is a respected authority with a safe environment for investment, offering significant opportunities for both domestic and international partners in financial and economic matters overall, encouraging them to seize this opportunity.
