How Canada’s Support for Palestinian Statehood Intensifies Pressure on Israel

Minister of Canada

Canada is set to officially recognize the State of Palestine during the upcoming United Nations General Assembly in September, as announced by Prime Minister Mark Carney on the evening of July 30.

‎This move comes amid escalating global pressure on Israel, particularly in light of the deteriorating humanitarian situation in Gaza.

‎Following similar commitments from France and the United Kingdom—where France confirmed its stance last week and Britain indicated support contingent on the cessation of hostilities—Carney highlighted the urgent need for action.

‎He expressed deep concern over the dire conditions in Gaza, saying that the vision of a Palestinian state is rapidly diminishing. Canada's decision is also influenced by the Palestinian Authority's promises to reform governance and conduct elections in 2026, with the stipulation that Hamas will not be involved.

‎As international condemnation mounts over Israel's restrictions on aid to Gaza, warnings of a potential famine loom large. Meanwhile, tensions persist, with Israeli officials suggesting the possibility of annexing parts of Gaza to exert further pressure on Hamas, a move that could jeopardize the prospects for Palestinian statehood.

‎Negotiations for a 60-day ceasefire and the release of Israeli hostages hit a standstill last week.

‎In Gaza, local resident Saed al-Akhras described the recent statements from Western nations as a "significant change" in the global perspective on the Palestinian struggle.

‎"Enough," he declared. "We have suffered through over 70 years of violence, devastation, and occupation while the world remained silent."

‎Nevertheless, families of Israeli hostages warned against hasty acknowledgment of Palestinian statehood. "This action does not lead to peace; rather, it represents a betrayal of international law and a moral failure that endorses terrorism," stated the Hostages Family Forum.

‎Netanyahu has expressed his support for peace but perceives any future Palestinian state as a potential threat that could serve as a base for attacks on Israel. He maintains that Israel must keep control over security issues. Several members of his cabinet — including far-right officials — are pushing for the annexation of all Palestinian lands.

‎On Tuesday, Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich remarked that the reestablishment of Jewish settlements in Gaza is now "more attainable than ever," referring to Gaza as "an integral part of the Land of Israel."
