Samia project Namtumbo

The President of the united republic of Tanzania Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan has  launched a uranium processing plant in Namtumbo, Ruvuma, marking it as the largest and unique uranium project in East Africa. It is located at the Mkuju River, this initiative is expected to drive significant economic, technical, and diplomatic transformations in the region.

‎The project is Set to officially commence in 2026, the project will require an investment exceeding 3.06 trillion Tanzanian shillings and is anticipated to contribute to the country's electricity generation.

‎'Mantra Tanzania Limited ' leads the project, collaborating with international firms like Russia's Rosatom to enhance infrastructure and technology, while also aiming to empower local communities as uranium mining emerges as a new sector in Tanzania. Once production begins at the Mkuju River project, Tanzania will become the third-largest uranium producer in Africa, following Niger and Namibia, which have significant reserves and established mining operations. Niger currently leads the continent in uranium production, with major mines operated by the French company Orano.

‎"Today marks a historic day for our nation, as Tanzania officially embarks on its journey to become a leading global producer of uranium for the first time at this scale,  Uranium is one of the strategic minerals we are fortunate to possess, and its availability will contribute to generating safe energy and enhancing Tanzania's position in the global mining sector," stated President Dr. Samia.

‎President Dr. Samia further noted that with this step, Tanzania is positioning itself as a hub for uranium research and processing in both the world and Africa. This move will open up new technological, professional, and investment opportunities in the country, placing Tanzania on the global map among the top 10 uranium-producing nations, thereby attracting international investment in the mining sector.

‎"The Mining Sector is one of the priorities of the National Vision 2050, as through this sector, Tanzania aims to foster an industrial economy that utilizes advanced technology alongside effective management of mineral resources," she added.

‎The benefits of this project include government dividends, where 20% of the shares owned by the government are expected to generate approximately $40 million annually, funds that will support development projects. Other benefits include job creation for Tanzanians, research, revenue, and royalties.

‎Additionally, President Samia has directed that the project be inclusive of the community through social projects (CSR), including education, health, water, and road infrastructure, while also adhering to " environmental protection" procedures to safeguard the ecological system of the Mkuju River area.

‎On his part, the Minister of Minerals, Hon. Anthony Mavunde, expressed gratitude to President Samia for prioritizing the mining sector, which has led to the initiation of significant projects, including the Mkuju project.

‎This project represents a significant step aimed at strengthening the economy, creating jobs, and opening new avenues for the development of citizens, especially those who are unemployed, while attracting international investment.
