UN chief said recently Africa could become a renewable superpower in energy sector.

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has urged for more investment in green energy throughout Africa, stating that the continent has all the potential to become a "renewable superpower."

While speaking at the Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD), Guterres highlighted the importance of mobilizing finance and technology to ensure that Africa's natural resources benefit its citizens and to establish a strong renewable energy and manufacturing sector.

"Green energy in Africa reduces energy costs, diversifies supply chains, and speeds up decarbonization for everyone," he mentioned.

Guterres cautioned that rising debt should not obstruct development and called for more concessional finance and enhanced lending capabilities from multilateral development banks.

He also stated, "Africa possesses everything necessary to become a renewable superpower, from solar and wind energy to the essential minerals that drive new technologies."

The conference gathered African leaders and Japanese officials to discuss clean energy, economic collaborations, and long-term investment prospects.
