The Atomic Energy Commission of Tanzania (TAEC) has launched a special radiation education campaign for secondary school students in Tanga region, where a total of 9,391 students from 10 schools received this training over the course of one week, from September 22 to 26, 2025.
The schools that participated include Chumbageni, Galanosi, Kiomoni, Mikanjuni, Mkwakwani, Usagara, Nguvumali, Pongwe, Mabokweni, and Msambweni. Through seminars, interactive discussions, hands-on training, and demonstrations of radiation equipment, students gained a comprehensive understanding of the safe use of nuclear technology and its contribution to everyday life.
For a long time, nuclear technology has been primarily associated with fears of destructive weapons. However, TAEC has placed significant emphasis on educating the youth that radiation and nuclear technology play a vital role in the health, agriculture, industry, and environmental sectors.
Among the benefits mentioned are the treatment and diagnosis of chronic diseases such as cancer through radiation therapy, improving agricultural seeds, purifying water, and enhancing the quality of industrial products.
Additionally, TAEC aims to inspire students to develop a passion for science subjects, particularly Physics, Chemistry, Biology, and Mathematics, which are foundational for careers related to medical physics, radiation safety, and nuclear engineering.
According to TAEC, this campaign also aims to safeguard community and environmental safety, while preparing future professionals who will assist the nation in combating cancer and other challenges that require the use of radiation technology.
