| Government of Austria's Support for Renewable Energy Projects in Tanzania |
The Austrian government, through UniCredit Bank, has pledged to provide the United Republic of Tanzania with a sum of 20 million Euros, equivalent to approximately 60 billion Tanzanian Shillings, for the implementation of solar and waste-to-energy projects.
This announcement was made by the Chief Executive Officer of Merl Solar Technologies GmbH, Mr. Hannnes Merl, during discussions with the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Energy, Mr. Felchesmi Mramba, on September 17, 2025, alongside the ongoing 69th General Conference of the International Atomic Energy Agency in Vienna, Austria.
To kick off these projects, Engineer Mramba has welcomed the company to Tanzania to meet with experts and begin the necessary preparations for these new electricity generation initiatives, assuring them of his cooperation in successfully executing these projects.
Mr. Felchesmi Mramba noted that Merl has already implemented various solar energy projects in the country, saying, "this company has executed energy projects in ten (10) villages from 2015 to 2017."
He mentioned that these projects consist of 14 container units for generating electricity using solar energy in the districts of Kongwa in Dodoma region, Mlele in Katavi region, and Uyui in Tabora region, with the project costing around 16.2 billion shillings.
He added that these projects have enabled 812 homes and residences, 27 places of worship, 6 schools, and 8 health centers to access electricity.
Engineer Mramba expressed gratitude to the Austrian government for efficiently executing these projects and for Austria's commitment to enhancing cooperation with the Tanzanian government in implementing the National Energy Compact, which aims to provide electricity to all Tanzanians by 2030 through the 300 mission plan.
