Jose Mourinho has acknowledged that his decision to join Turkish Super Lig team Fenerbahce was a misstep.

The 62-year-old manager has been without a job since last month, when Fenerbahce let him go after the team failed to secure a spot in the Champions League.

His sudden availability sparked rumors about his next destination, and earlier this week, he was heavily linked to Benfica after Bruno Lage's departure. On Thursday, Benfica officially announced Mourinho’s hiring in a statement to the country’s Securities Market Commission, revealing a contract that extends until the conclusion of the 2026–27 season.

During his introductory press conference, Mourinho reflected on his brief tenure in Turkey and outlined his aspirations for Benfica.

"My career has been diverse, with coaching experiences across various countries. I made an incorrect choice, but I harbor no regrets. Joining Fenerbahce was a mistake, yet I committed fully until my last day. Coaching Benfica feels like a return to my rightful place," Mourinho stated.

Looking forward, he expressed optimism about Benfica’s ability to compete for trophies.

"Promises hold their value. Back at FC Porto, I made promises that I could have broken. I genuinely believe Benfica possesses all the necessary qualities to clinch the championship. We’ve lost points, and there may be more to come, but we are starting anew.

Benfica has the talent within the squad to become champions. This isn’t just a promise; it’s a firm belief that we can and must achieve this. For me, the context is about coaching one of the most prestigious clubs in the world.
