Ken Griffin Warns AI Bubble Is “Almost Certainly” Here, Draws Dot-Com Parallels

Citadel’s Ken Griffin says markets are “almost certainly” caught in an AI bubble, comparing today’s hype to the dot-com boom and saying he wishes he’d kept his Amazon stock.

Billionaire investor Ken Griffin has warned that financial markets are “almost certainly” caught up in an artificial intelligence bubble, echoing historical patterns seen during past technological revolutions.

Speaking at the Future of Global Markets Conference in New York on Tuesday, the Citadel founder and chief executive officer addressed the massive influx of capital into the sector. Griffin observed that major technological overhauls historically develop alongside speculative bubbles.

“Any radical transformation of our economy is generally intertwined with a bubble,” Griffin said during the interview.

To contextualize the current market environment, Griffin drew comparisons to the late 1990s dot-com boom, recalling the speculative fervor and the numerous “fanciful” business models that ultimately collapsed when the market corrected. Despite the parallels to the internet bubble, Griffin acknowledged the long-term staying power of true technological innovators from that era, wryly noting his regret over selling early holdings in dominant survivors. “I just wish I’d kept my Amazon stock in that moment,” he said.

Griffin’s remarks in New York mark a continuation of his evolving commentary on artificial intelligence over the past year. Earlier this year during appearances in Davos, he dismissed much of the prevailing AI hype as garbage. By May, speaking to an audience at the Stanford Graduate School of Business, he shifted his tone to express astonishment mixed with apprehension regarding the rapid capabilities of modern AI systems.

Griffin leads a financial empire that encompasses both the Citadel hedge fund and the market-maker Citadel Securities. His commentary comes as Wall Street continues to grapple with soaring valuations among technology firms heavily invested in artificial intelligence infrastructure, chips, and software development.
