The African Commission on Human and Peoples' Rights has commended the President of the United Republic of Tanzania, Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan, for the country's efforts in promoting and safeguarding civil, political, economic, cultural, and social rights.
This acknowledgment was made by the Commission's Chairperson, Prof. Lemy Ngoy Lumbu, during the 83rd session of the Commission held at its headquarters in Banjul, Gambia, where Tanzania is represented by the Ministry of Constitutional Affairs and Justice through the 'Human Rights Department. '
In his presentation, government lawyer Mr. Candid Nasua highlighted President Samia's philosophy of upholding human rights, emphasizing reconciliation, tolerance, reform, and nation-building, which have collectively strengthened human rights, national unity, peace, and development in the country.
He noted that Tanzania is preparing for general elections this year, following local government elections in 2024, where registered political parties will participate.
Furthermore, he affirmed the government's commitment to ensuring citizens benefit from 'freedom of expression' and the right to information.
Nasua also mentioned the launch of a National Action Plan for the Rights and Welfare of Persons with Albinism, alongside initiatives to support individuals with disabilities, ensuring access to essential services such as water, electricity, and healthcare.
The government continues to collaborate with civil society organizations, non-governmental organizations, and development partners across various sectors, fostering cooperation between the government and the private sector to enhance peace, love, and quality education within the community.
