Cristiano Ronaldo has expressed a deeply moving tribute to Diogo Jota following the tragic news of his Portugal teammate's death in a car accident on Thursday, July 3.
Jota passed away at the young age of 28 after his Lamborghini veered off the road in northern Spain, merely two weeks after he wed his childhood sweetheart.
The 28-year-old Portuguese striker lost his life in the early hours of Thursday while traveling in the supercar near Zamora, alongside his fellow footballer brother Andre, 26, who also tragically died in the incident.
Jota had recently married Rute Cardoso, the mother of his three children, and in his last Instagram post on Wednesday afternoon, he referred to himself as the luckiest man in the world to be her husband.
It is believed that a tyre blowout occurred while overtaking on the A-52 at Cernadilla near Zamora in northwestern Spain, close to the Portuguese border, in the early hours of that morning.
Portugal's captain, Ronaldo, paid tribute to Jota and his brother Andre through a social media post.
This heartbreaking news comes just weeks after Ronaldo and Jota had contributed to Portugal's victory in the Nations League.
'It is incomprehensible. Just moments ago we were together in the National Team, just moments ago you had gotten married,' Ronaldo remarked.
'To your family, your wife, and your children, I extend my condolences and wish them all the strength in the world. I know you will always be with them.
'Rest in Peace, Diogo and André. You will be greatly missed by all.'
