Meeting in Madagascar

The 45th Summit of Heads of State from the Southern African Development Community (SADC) has started today ,  August 4, 2025, in Antananarivo, Madagascar, alongside a meeting of senior officials has reviewed the implementation of the Regional Indicative Strategic Development Plan 2030 (RISDP).

Tanzania is actively participating in this significant regional development meeting, with its delegation led by the Regional Director from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and East African Cooperation, Ms. Talha Waziri.

In his opening remarks, the Secretary-General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Trade of Zimbabwe, Ambassador Albert Chimbindi, said that the purpose of the meeting is to assess the progress of the RISDP implementation, identify the challenges hindering its execution, and seek collective solutions.

He added that while various reports indicate that the plan is achieving success, there is still a need for collaborative efforts among member states to expedite the implementation of this plan, which has only a few years left until its completion.

"We need SADC member states to intensify their joint efforts to accelerate the implementation of infrastructure projects and enhance trade among themselves, which, despite statistics showing an increase, is not at a satisfactory level," Ambassador Chimbindi said

Additionally, the Deputy Executive Secretary of SADC responsible for Regional Cooperation, Ms. Angeles N’Tumba, emphasized the importance of member states developing sustainable ways to secure funding for the implementation of the plan. She mentioned the necessity of learning how other regional communities secure funding for their development plans, citing ECOWAS as having a robust and sustainable resource mobilization strategy for advancing their projects.

The meeting will conclude with a SADC Heads of State Summit starting on August 17, 2025, where Tanzania will fully participate at all levels of these meetings.
