Tanzania's Vice President Speaks Out: Transformative Strategies from the Second Climate Change Conference

The Vice President of the United Republic of Tanzania, Hon. Dr. Philip Mpango, addressing the Second Conference of African Heads of State and Government on Climate Change taking place at the Addis International Conference Center (AICC).

The Vice President of the United Republic of Tanzania, Hon. Dr. Philip Mpango, has said that although Africa contributes less than four percent to global greenhouse gas emissions, it is the most affected by climate change. Therefore, it urgently requires assistance to cope with this situation and to ensure a green revolution.

‎The Vice President made these remarks while addressing the Second Conference of African Heads of State and Government on Climate Change taking place in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. He called on international partners to fulfill their financial commitments through new and predictable means as agreed under the Paris Agreement .

‎He emphasized the importance of prioritizing international goals to ensure resilience to climate change is given equal attention as efforts to combat climate change.

‎Additionally, the Vice President noted that energy transformation is a crucial pillar in the fight against climate change. He added that Tanzania is continuing to increase investments in renewable energy through hydropower, solar, geothermal, and wind, while also utilizing natural gas as a clean transitional energy source to support industrial development and implementing a clean cooking energy strategy aimed at ensuring that eighty percent of households use clean cooking energy by 2034.

‎" Tanzania remains committed to working with all stakeholders to advance the goal of providing electricity to 300 million people across Africa by 2030, as envisioned in the 300 Mission Energy Conference held in Dar es Salaam in January 2025." he said 

‎"Blue Economy Policy of Zanzibar and the Blue Economy Strategic Plan for mainland Tanzania strengthen the sustainable use of marine, coastal, and terrestrial resources, supporting employment and resilience in fishing activities, maritime transport, and other related sectors." he added.

‎He emphasized that for the 30th International Conference on Climate Change (COP30) to be successful, it must yield comprehensive, inclusive, and equitable outcomes. He added that Tanzania will provide full support to Brazil to ensure that this conference is executed for the benefit of Africa and the world at large.

‎" Tanzania will persist in amplifying Africa's voice, seeking pathways, and working towards meaningful outcomes that reflect Africa's needs and its capacity as a partner in global solutions." he said

‎Before the commencement of this conference, Heads of State and Government led a tree-planting initiative as a symbol of one of the ways to combat climate change.

‎The theme of this conference is "Accelerating Global Climate Solutions and Financing for Africa's Resilient and Green Development."

‎This conference is preceded by various events, including the Africa Climate Week 2025, which took place from September 1 to 6, 2025, aimed at advancing efforts to accelerate the implementation of the Paris Agreement on climate change.

‎In addition to government representatives, the conference has also been attended by youth, the private sector, civil society organizations, and non-governmental organizations.
