Former Prime Minister of Kenya, Raila Amolo Odinga, passed away on the morning of Wednesday, October 15, 2025, while under medical supervision in the city of Kochi, India.
According to reports from doctors, Odinga collapsed suddenly during his morning exercises at the Ayurvedic natural treatment hospital where he was receiving care.
Following the incident, he was swiftly transferred to Devamatha Hospital in the Koothattukulam area, but the doctors' efforts to restore him to a stable condition were unsuccessful. It was confirmed that he suffered a heart attack and died at 9:52 AM Indian time.
Reports indicate that his body has been preserved at the hospital while the legal process for repatriating it back to Kenya is underway, in collaboration with Indian authorities and the Kenyan embassy.
Raila was accompanied by his daughter, Rosemary Odinga, who is also receiving Ayurvedic treatment at Sreedhareeyam Hospital, a facility that previously assisted her in regaining part of her vision.
The Indian government, through the Foreigners Regional Registration Office (FRRO), has initiated the formal process to return the body to Kenya in accordance with diplomatic protocols.
Raila Odinga, who passed away at the age of 80, has been a significant figure in Kenyan politics, directly associated with the struggles for democracy, justice, and good governance since the era of his father, the founding father of the nation, Jomo Kenyatta.
