Nigeria took the lead with a goal in the 36th minute of the first half, scored by their striker Alex Iwobi. Taifa Stars managed to equalize in the 50th minute through Charles William M’Mombwa, reigniting hope among Tanzanian fans.
However, just two minutes later, in the 52nd minute, Nigeria struck again with a second goal from Ademola Lookman, ultimately securing three crucial points in Group C.
Despite the loss, Taifa Stars, under coach Miguel Gamondi, displayed significant resistance, playing with discipline and confidence. The squad included players from abroad as well as local stars from clubs like Simba SC, Young Africans (Yanga), and Azam FC.
This marks Tanzania's fourth participation in the AFCON finals, with Taifa Stars placed in Group C, which is considered one of the toughest groups, featuring Nigeria, Tunisia, and Uganda.
Nigeria and Tanzania have met in the AFCON finals for the second time. The first encounter was in 1980, where Nigeria defeated Tanzania 3-1 in the opening match held in Lagos, before claiming their first African championship.
Overall, the two teams have faced each other eight times in all competitions. Nigeria has never lost to Tanzania, winning five matches and drawing three.
The last time these teams met was during the AFCON 2017 qualifiers, where they played to a 0-0 draw in Dar es Salaam, followed by Nigeria winning 1-0 in the return leg played in Uyo.
