How Tanzania is Elevating MUHAS into a Premier Medical and Academic Hub

‎Tanzania is transforming the Muhimbili University of Health and Allied Sciences (MUHAS) into a hub for academia and healthcare, incorporating specialized centers that will provide medical services, education, and research to strengthen the health sector and higher education in the country.

This initiative stems from significant ongoing investments in the campus, alongside the establishment of a unique center for cardiovascular and vascular diseases, the only one of its kind in East Africa.

‎Tanzania has allocated 83 million US dollars for the construction of a hospital dedicated to treating these diseases as part of the center, enabling research, practical training, and patient care.

Tanzania's vision for MUHAS as a center of medical expertise, enhancing healthcare through specialized facilities and significant investments in education and research.

Additionally, the government has completed a strategy to establish a center of excellence for oral and dental health in East Africa.

‎Speaking on March 17, 2026, in Dar es Salaam during a visit by the Parliamentary Committee on Education, Culture, and Sports, the Minister of Education, Science, and Technology, Prof. Adolf Mkenda, stated that these efforts are driven by the vision of the President to make Tanzania a center for medical expertise in the East and Central Africa region, ensuring that the nation produces enough professionals and specialists to serve both Tanzanians and foreign patients seeking care.

‎"The goal is to develop the Mloganzila campus into a center with numerous specialized facilities across various medical fields, distinguishing these centers from hospitals as they will focus on research, training, and providing medical services," said Minister Mkenda.

‎Prof. Mkenda further added that the government is also planning to establish a center of excellence for cancer treatment to broaden the scope of specialized services in the country.

‎Through the Higher Education for Economic Transformation (HEET) project, the Mloganzila campus has been allocated over 77 billion shillings for the construction of an Administration Building for the Medical Faculty, an ICT building, a library, laboratories, lecture halls, an Anatomy building, and student hostels, where the campus will accommodate more than 1,000 students in total.

This initiative aims to enhance research, health, skills, and exceptional proficiency in delivering healthcare services to the public.
