Tanzania and Rwanda have agreed to deepen their partnership in energy and infrastructure, a move aimed at boosting economic growth across East Africa. The announcement came from Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan during Rwandan President Paul Kagame’s visit to Dar es Salaam.

President Samia highlighted that both nations plan to upgrade transport links to make it easier to move goods and expand trade. She pointed out how closely connected the two economies already are—around 70% of Rwanda’s cargo moves through Tanzanian ports, with roughly 1.6 million tons of goods transported annually between them.

On the energy front, Samia mentioned the Rusumo Falls hydropower project, a joint effort that also includes Burundi

The plant generates 80 megawatts of electricity, and preparations are underway to officially launch it.

She also noted that Tanzania’s TANESCO and Rwanda’s energy utility are finalizing plans to start exchanging electricity.

This strengthened cooperation, both leaders agree, will help provide more reliable power and support industrial and business growth in Tanzania and Rwanda.

President Kagame’s visit is seen as opening new avenues for collaboration, particularly in energy and infrastructure—key drivers for modern economic development in the region.
