How the New Tanzania-Egypt Port Agreement Will Transform Trade in Africa

President Samia Suluhu Hassan has announced that Tanzania and Egypt have reached an agreement to link their ' seaports ' a move designed to boost trade, attract investment, and expand market access across Africa and the Gulf region.

Speaking at State House in Dar es Salaam following official talks with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, President Samia said the partnership will involve the continued development of Dar es Salaam port and the construction of a dedicated Egyptian cargo and container storage zone at Bagamoyo port, which will be connected by rail to Kwala to enhance freight efficiency.

"We have agreed to advance discussions on linking the ports of Dar es Salaam, Bagamoyo, Safaga, and other Egyptian ports," President Samia said.

 "This will ease the movement of goods, lower trade costs, and sharpen the global competitiveness of both nations." She added 

Under the plan, Tanzanian products will gain smoother entry into Gulf markets, while Egyptian goods will reach East and Southern African nations through Tanzania's ports.

President Samia noted that President El-Sisi had arrived with a delegation of 35 leading business figures taking part in the Tanzania-Egypt Business Forum, a move expected to lift bilateral trade and investment volumes significantly.

The President also revealed that EgyptAir already operates three flights a week between the two countries and urged Air Tanzania to launch direct services to Egypt to facilitate passenger travel, boost tourism, and expand business opportunities.

The partnership will  positions Tanzania to remain a vital commercial and logistics hub for East and Southern Africa while further strengthening economic and trade relations between the two countries.
