Safal Swahili Prize for African Literature Winners to be Revealed on July 24, 2026

The winners of the 10th edition of the Safal Swahili Prize for African Literature are expected to be announced on July 24, 2026, in Dar es Salaam, after the organizers released a shortlist of seven manuscripts across three competitive categories.

Sponsored by the Safal Group through its subsidiaries Mabati Rolling Mills (Kenya) and ALAF Limited (Tanzania), the prize aims to recognize and promote literary works in African languages and to encourage translations of those languages.

This year, the award marks 10 years since its inception in 2015, having been presented annually except in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Speaking during the announcement of the finalists, ALAF Limited's Communications and Relations Manager, Hawa Bayumi, said the milestone is part of celebrating the achievements of the prize's 10-year journey.

The chair of the judging panel, Professor Rayya Timammy from the University of Nairobi, said this year's competition was intense due to the large number of high-quality works submitted.

This year, a total of 230 entries from seven countries were submitted for the Safal Swahili Prize for African Literature. The award ceremony will take place at the New Library Hall of the University of Dar es Salaam.The award seek to promote the African literature worldwide.
