The Odyssey: Christopher Nolan's Blockbuster Breaks Records with $264.1 Million Opening Weekend

The new film The Odyssey, directed by Oscar-winning filmmaker Christopher Nolan, has made a remarkable debut, grossing over 713 billion Tanzanian Shillings in its first weekend of global screenings.

‎With an estimated exchange rate of about 2,700 Shillings per dollar, the film's earnings of 264.1 million dollars equate to more than 713 billion Shillings.

‎In the United States alone, the film has amassed 124.5 million dollars, approximately 336 billion Shillings, while international markets contributed 139.6 million dollars, nearly 377 billion Shillings.

‎This success positions The Odyssey as the third-largest opening film in the United States for 2026, trailing only Toy Story 5 and The Super Mario Galaxy Movie. It also marks the largest international opening of Christopher Nolan's directing career.

‎The film is a continuation of Nolan's work following the success of Oppenheimer, which won seven Oscars in 2024.

‎The Odyssey is a modern retelling of the famous tale by the ancient Greek poet Homer, following the journey of Odysseus, played by Matt Damon, as he attempts to return home after a decade of war.

‎In addition to Matt Damon, the film features other Hollywood stars including Tom Holland, Zendaya, Anne Hathaway, and Robert Pattinson.

‎Even before its official release, The Odyssey had already set records for ticket sales in IMAX 70mm screenings, with some tickets reselling for over 2.7 million Shillings (more than 1,000 dollars) in the online marketplace.

‎Moreover, the film has received positive reviews from critics, boasting a 96% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, making it one of the best films ever directed by Christopher Nolan.

Universal Pictures initially projected a $100m opening weekend in North America. There, men made up 56% of the general audience and more than three-quarters of ticket buyers older than 25. Half of the film’s audience were aged between 18 and 34.

‎The UK and Ireland took the top spot for the territory with the biggest international open – with £12.9m (US$17.4m) across three days.

‎The Odyssey is the first feature movie to be filmed entirely with Imax cameras – a system of very heavy and loud cameras that capture a sharper, brighter and higher-resolution content.

‎Screenings for the film were sold out at the BFI Imax cinema in London for the opening weekend, with fans arriving as early as midnight and 4am to watch the film.

‎The Odyssey was rolled out internationally across 73 markets over the weekend and launched across more than 12,800 locations and 26,000 screens around the world, including 440 Imax screens. In North America, “premium large formats”, which include Imax, accounted for 53% of box office.

‎With this pace of earnings, The Odyssey is poised to be one of the dominant films in the global cinema market in 2026.
