The Tanzania Electric Supply Company (TANESCO) has begun promoting the use of modern appliances that efficiently use electricity , to ensure that by the year 2030 the community utilizes clean cooking energy in Tanzania.
The Executive Director of TANESCO, Lazaro Twange, has handed over a pressure cooker device from SESCOM, which consumes low electricity, to the District Commissioner of Shinyanga, Advocate Julius Mtatiro, as part of a campaign to educate the community on the use of clean energy and to move away from the use of firewood and charcoal.
Speaking during the handover ceremony held today at the office of the District Commissioner of Shinyanga, Twange stated that the energy sector is currently not only focused on the production and distribution of electricity but also has a role in promoting the efficient use of that energy in households.
"We want the citizens to understand that the use of clean energy is safe for health, environmentally friendly, and reduces costs in the long run. This is one of TANESCO's new responsibilities in protecting the environment and supporting national efforts to combat climate change," Twange said.
On his part, the District Commissioner of Shinyanga, Advocate Julius Mtatiro, expressed gratitude to the organization for this contribution and promised that the district government through his office will continue to educate the public through various public meetings to increase awareness about the importance of moving away from dirty energy.
"I will ensure that the Shinyanga community receives adequate education on the use of clean energy, and we will do this through village and ward meetings. We need a change in mindset to save our environment and the health of our citizens," Mtatiro stated.
The TANESCO Director is currently in Shinyanga on a work visit to inspect the implementation of various electricity projects being carried out in the region.
The use of clean energy is a national strategy aimed at improving health and reducing the deaths of women who have often suffered from diseases due to the use of dirty cooking energy.
Additionally, the government continues to strengthen this strategy initiated by President Samia to ensure that citizens live in friendly environments that will protect their health from diseases caused by climate change.
