Tanzania has made significant progress in digital health transformation by officially launching AtheroPoint, a cardiac monitoring technology powered by artificial intelligence (AI), through a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signed with Heameda Hospital.
The technology was developed by Dr. Jasjit S. Suri, founder and CEO of CP AtheroPoint, and has already been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
It is already in use in Ghana and Nigeria, and now Tanzania has taken the first steps to adopt it.
“‘Monitoring Made Simple- not just a slogan; it’s an approach to transforming healthcare from reactive treatment to early detection.
Artificial intelligence (AI) allows us to provide high-quality diagnostics even in resource-limited settings,” said Dr. Suri.
The launch event brought together experts from MUHAS, JKCI, NHIF, and private hospitals.
At the event, Dr. Hery Mwandolela, cardiologist and CEO of Heameda Hospital, said that through Heameda's efforts, AtheroPoint has been introduced to the country, and a memorandum of understanding (MOU) has already been signed to begin testing the technology.
"We are proud to be the first institution in the country to partner with AtheroPoint. This technology will not replace the doctor, but will enhance our rapid, accurate, and life-saving decisions," said Dr. Hery.
Dr. Angela Paul Muhozya, a cardiac anesthesia specialist, added that the technology could help reduce patient overcrowding at referral hospitals.
"By detecting heart problems early, we can reduce emergency and surgical cases, thus easing a heavy burden on hospitals," she explained.
NHIF representatives were also present, demonstrating their willingness to collaborate with innovators to improve access to early detection services. Although this technology has not yet been officially implemented in the country, the signing of the agreement marks a new direction for Tanzania towards modern AI-based treatments.
