World Bank to Launch Kilovolt Power Transmission Project to Strengthen Uganda-Tanzania Energy Link

World bank to fund uganda- Tanzania project

The World Bank (WB) has announced its commitment to fund the construction of a high-voltage 400 kV power transmission line from Uganda to Tanzania.

This information was shared by Dr. Rhonda Jordan, an energy specialist from the World Bank's Tanzania office, during a meeting with the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Energy, Mr. Felchesmi Mramba, at the Ministry's offices in Mtumba, Dodoma, on July 23.

Dr. Rhonda indicated that the bank has approved the project after confirming that it poses no environmental risks, contrary to previous concerns.

The Board of Directors is set to authorize the release of funds to initiate the project, which had faced delays due to environmental impact claims.

Additionally, Dr. Rhonda invited the Ministry of Energy to participate in a United Nations conference scheduled for September 2025 in New York.

In their discussions, Mr. Mramba assured Dr. Rhonda of continued collaboration with the World Bank on various energy projects, including the Tanzania-Zambia power transmission project (TAZA) and similar initiatives. The meeting was also attended by the Commissioner for Electricity and Renewable Energy, Mr. Innocent Luoga, and Chief Energy Engineer John Mageni.
